Religious School

The objective of the TBE Religious School is to educate students about Jewish history, holidays, ethics and traditions while offering a positive cultural experience. Our program is sensitive to the needs of children of interfaith families.
 

Lower School (Preschool-5th grade)

Religious School meets Saturday mornings in 2 sessions.
·  8:30 am to 10:15 am
· 10:45 am to 12:30 pm
Rabbi Levy leads a 15-minute service at the beginning or end of each session, then students divide into classes by grade.

Curricula for younger children includes: Jewish holidays, Israel, prayers, Bible stories, songs & customs. Curricula for older students includes: Jewish history, current events, Bible, prayers, ethics, Israel, Jewish Identity, Reform Judaism and the life cycle.

Upper School (6th - 12th Grades)

Upper school meets Sunday evenings from 6 - 7:30 pm. The students enjoy learning in a relaxed atmosphere. Curricula includes Jewish Life Cycle, Mitzvot, Modern Jewish History, Confirmation for 10th graders, and an 11/12th grade seminars. Pizza is served at the beginning of each class.

The Hebrew School Program

The objective of the TBE Hebrew School is to educate students to participate more fully in services as well as prepare them for the B'nai Mitzvah experience. Students are instructed in written & spoken Hebrew language & prayers. Hebrew School is for students in grades 3-6 and meets once per week from 4:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday or Wednesday. Students divide into grade specific classrooms in order to study Hebrew. Weekly Hebrew homework assignments are an integral part of our Hebrew School program.

Conversational Hebrew is available to our 8th graders on Monday afternoons. Advanced Hebrew classes are available for students with exceptional Hebrew skills.

Madrichim Program (9th-12th Grades)

Madrichim are paid classroom assistants who enrich our school by providing teachers with extra help and serving as role models for younger students. Ninth graders can participate in monthly training sessions preparing them to work as teacher assistants or office aides in our school. 10th-12th grade  work in the Saturday Religious School classrooms and/or the Monday or Wednesday Hebrew School classrooms.

Advanced Hebrew Study for High School Students

Keshet Ann Arbor is a program in which high school students are able to receive public school credit (through the Community Resource program) for studying Hebrew language.  They offer four levels of instruction from beginner through advanced. Class focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with emphasis on communication and every day use of Modern Hebrew.  Click here for brochure for full details.  Click here for registration form.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutoring

Cantor Annie Rose offers a dynamic Bar/Bat Mitzvah training program which includes small group work and individual tutoring. Students begin training approximately one year before their bar or bat mitzvah. There is an additional fee for this program.

Youth Musical Programs

The TBE Youth Choir consists of 3rd to 5th grade students, and rehearsals are held during Hebrew School on Mondays & Wednesdays. Shir Chadash consists of vocal & instrumental ensembles, one for middle school students and the other for high school students. Middle School Shir Chadash rehearses on Sundays from 4:00-5:00 (1 hour before school starts). High School Shir Chadash rehearses on Sundays from 7:30-8:30 pm (1 hour after school ends). Opportunities exist for solo instrumental & vocal performances. All students interested in singing and playing percussion instruments are encouraged to join! Family Education

Each year in grades Preschool 4 - 5th grade, there is a Family Program. These vary in theme and type of activity and are designed to have parents and students learn together.
Pre-School 4: Family Tashlich Program takes place at a local park.
Kindergarten:  Our Torah Stories- explore Torah stories in creative ways.
First Grade: Shabbat Dinner and Consecration Ceremony.
Second Grade: Visit "Shalom Street", a Jewish Children's Museum in West Bloomfield.
Third Grade: "A Rosenthal by Any Other Name"- explore Jewish naming traditions.
Fourth Grade:  Havdallah Service- learn about customs of Havdallah & create a Havdallah set.
Fifth Grade: Exodus Journey- learn unusual Passover customs, make Sephardic & Ashkenazic charoset, & do a mitzvah project.

Library

The library is an integral part of the Religious School curriculum, used both by teachers and students. We have computers with Internet access and Judaic programs.  Our computer programs range in level from preschool through adult. Additionally, we have a Judaic Video  Collection with over 200 titles including many Jewish and Israeli dvds.
