Volunteers Needed at Alpha House
April 19-25
Families can participate with their children, ages 7 & up.
Alpha House, the Interfaith Hospitality Network shelter for homeless families with children, needs you during the week April 19–25. TBE and St Clare’s have been asked to provide volunteers during this time. Alpha House can make you to feel warmer than the weather may suggest.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Provide dinner (child friendly for about 25 people each evening. Suggestions are: sloppy joes, hot dogs and baked beans, tacos, chili, receipts, and the Alpha House staff will give you a signed receipt.
- Serve dinner, eat with the families, clean up and spend time with the kids during the early evening, from 5:30-8:30 each evening. Sometimes an activity is planned and other evenings there is an enormous basement playroom for the kids.
- Spend the night from 8:30 pm until 7:30 am (or whenever you have to leave) in the morning. A bedroom is provided; you are mainly needed in the unlikely case of an emergency.
- Spend 3 hours (8:30–11:30 am, 11:30–2:30, and 2:30–5:30 pm) during the day on weekends, “hanging out” with the families, putting together breakfast or lunch with food that is available and possibly doing some work to help the staff.
If you are volunteering for the first time, an experienced volunteer and a staff member will also be there with you. For more information or to volunteer, phone Susan Greenberg, 761-3253 or e-mail: sjgrog@umich.edu. We are so appreciative of all of you who have been helping over the years. It is exciting when a new family or individual steps forward.
